Garden Terrace
Our Family History
Garden Terrace has been family owned and operated for over five decades by the Flemming family. We are a private, thirty bed, skilled nursing facility that specializes in long term care for individuals with cognitive and/or physical limitations. Our philosophy is to enrich and enhance every day to the best that it can be for each individual resident.
In 1964, John and Johanna Flemming ventured into the purchase of a residential home located in the quaint town of Chatham, New Jersey where elderly people in poor health received assistance. Garden Terrace Nursing Home was born into the Flemming family as John worked diligently with the State of New Jersey to have the residence properly updated and licensed as a Skilled Nursing Facility.
John’s son Peter, a Registered Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, and his wife Phyllis Flemming, a school teacher, bought the facility in 1978. The couple spent their lives improving the home and making it their own, creating a beautiful environment encompassing the innovative philosophy that older adults richly deserve to be treasured and cared for with love, dignity, respect and grace. Peter and Phyllis have recently passed the reins to their two children Laura Flemming Collins, a Licensed Social Worker and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and Peter Flemming, Jr., a Registered Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator.
Laura and Peter Jr. embody these practices and have added their own style that encompasses superior communication with each family, focusing on specific attention to detail in a timely manner. We recognize the limitations of healthcare options today and personally guide residents and families through the challenging maze often experienced in today’s depersonalized and bureaucratic healthcare industry.
